Strawberries and White Cake

Nothing was forgotten, not on their “special” night. A picnic by the lake, music too slow dance to, even dessert. Delya Rogers smiled as Will led her across the field, holding hands. She wanted to scream and shout victory to all those who said that a poor girl like her could never hope to land the likes of Will Larsen. Instead, she followed where he led, sat when he sat, and allowed him to pull her atop him. Delya had been kissed only once before, a brief stutter of lips on a date that had grown musty in her memories.

To be here now, in Will’s arms—words couldn’t express the ecstasy she felt. Perhaps that’s why she let things get a bit too far. She hadn’t counted on the sound of slamming doors or the homecoming queen and Will’s former flame, Jessica Daley, and her cohorts, Amanda Calder and Jennifer Roberts showing. What happened then was kind of like a freeze frame in her mind. Jessica shoving and hitting Will. Amanda and Jennifer pulling Delya free by her hair.

“What are you doing with this low-life? Everyone else taken for the night?” Jessica cocked her head the way all popular girls seemed to do. Eyes narrowed, she looked from him to Delya.

Will stepped between her and Delya. “Leave her out of this.”

“It’s too late for that. Isn’t it Rogers?” Jessica said.

Delya flinched as Amanda and Jennifer slapped her face.

“Stop that,” Will said and tried to break the girls apart. Jessica jumped on his back, raking him with her fingernails, kicking, and biting him.

“You’re mine, hear that? I won’t stand for your two timing shit—“

“Hear that?” Amanda and Jennifer said in unison to Delya. “You better run. Run and don’t come back.”

Jessica had Will on the ground, attacking him as Amanda and Jennifer let Delya free.

“Well, go on, run, poor girl. Back to the shack you came from. And don’t look back.”

Delya saw Will reach out a hand to break Jessica’s attack and though she realized she was outnumbered, threw herself at Jessica. She knocked the girl free of Will as he struggled to get to his feet and hold back the other two.

She saw him wipe at his bloody nose. “Run, Delya. I’ll take care of this.”

Delya shook her head as she worked to pin Jessica’s arms.

“I’ll kill you for that, freak,” Jessica said.

Delya reached out and struck her across the face.

            Face red, Jessica screamed.

Sirens came down the Old Long Road.

Amanda and Jennifer turned to run.

Will turned to Delya. He held out his hand. “It’s over now, babe.”

Delya looked from Jessica to him.

Jessica glared at her. “Go on, “babe,” let me up. And I’ll ruin your world.”

There was the sound of footsteps.

            “Sweetheart,” Will said.

With a sigh, Delya released her only to be thrown to the ground by Jessica who beat on her until Chief Connec pulled her off. Seconds later, he nodded to Officer Burges to take her off. He turned to Will and Delya. “Want to press charges?”

Delya shook her head but Will said, “Yes.”

“Come to the station and fill a report out,” Chief Connec told them. He started to walk off.

“Chief,” Will called. “There was two more—”

“They’re handcuffed and in back of the squad cars. I think their damage is done for the night.”

“And what about tomorrow?” Will said. “When Delya walks the streets alone? Goes to school? Goes anywhere? And I’m not there with her?”

Delya tried to catch his attention but he went on.

“She can get restraining orders against all three.”

“Is that going to be enough?” Will demanded.

Delya tried to hold Will’s face in her hands but he shook his head.

“This needs to be taken care of, Chief. Jessica and her friends have gone too far, at school, on the internet, and now here.”

            “We’ll handle it, son.”

Will pulled Delya to him, kissing her forehead. “I hope so, Chief.”

Delya began to cry and Will held her tighter. “I won’t let them hurt you anymore.”

She signed that she loved him and dried her tears. “Let’s go. To the station. I’m ready to face this.”

He took her hand. “We’ll face it together.”

  1. Wasn’t expecting a fight scene, Traci. It’s wonderful to get different takes on these photos. Liked that Will was on her side through this.

  2. Traci,
I like that you touched on such a serious subject. And I too, liked that Will stuck with her. When I first read it I was worried that maybe he was playing a joke on her, but I’m glad to see that he wasn’t.

    Great job!

  4. Nice job lady. I didn’t expect a full on fight scene but thought it was handled well and I like that the authorities and Will were on her side. Also nicely done on the signing thing it was a nice subtle touch. :)
