Writerly Things 6/15/2020: Things Out of Balance

Traci Kenworth

I’m not sure even how to begin what’s going on in our world right now. There’s the coronavirus. There’s peaceful protest. Then there are the violent and destructive portions. Not to mention the police officers who’ve been attacking black individuals out there. And then sadly, there’s the transphobic atmosphere going on. Just when I thought we’d been hit by enough with the virus that has yet shown signs of “slowing down” despite the warm climate some predicted would kill it. A few more months of summer and then we’ll head down the slope toward winter. Yeah, a GOT reference. Go figure.

People standing up for what they believe is right and fair are all good. That’s what America is about, expressing free will. Everyone has a right to a better life. No one should be harassed. However, those that are destroying businesses and looting? They’re not there to support anything. They’re there to take. What isn’t theirs. There’s no rights for that. They should be arrested. Just because there are protests going on doesn’t give anyone the right to go in and steal. Set cars and buildings on fire. What if there are people in there? Is murder excused? I don’t think so.

All of this gives me some things to think on. I hope others do as well.

  1. I agree with you, Traci, there are no excuses for the violence and destruction. We experience the same sort of thing here and innocent people get killed and hurt and businesses are destroyed leaving people destitute.
